The History of China’s Dragon Boat Festival

The Dragon Boat Festival is a traditional Chinese holiday which occurs on the fifth day of the fifth month

of the Chinese calendar, which corresponds to late May or June in the Gregorian calendar.

A commemoration of the ancient poet Qu Yuan, the holiday is celebrated by holding dragon boat races and

eating sticky rice dumplings called zongzi.

Traditions of the Dragon Boat Festival

Besides racing dragon boats, it is also tradition to scatter rice into the river. Legend has it that the local people

of the Chu Kingdom would scatter rice into the river in the hopes of it preventing the fish from eating Qu Yuan’s

body.

Food and Drink of Dragon Boat Festival

Traditional celebratory food includes sticky rice dumplings called zongzi, which are filled with meats and beans.

Zongzi is traditionally wrapped in a triangle or rectangle shape using bamboo or reed leaves and tied with

colorful silk cords.

Drinking realgar wine is another key tradition of the dragon boat festival and is a Chinese alcoholic beverage

made of fermented cereals and powdered realgar.
